When I say the word 'return' I think about returning a movie to blockbuster. Yes, it's a place that used to exist my friends who are young and do not know. You would call it redbox. That's me though. However. I don't want to talk to you about blockbuster or redbox. I want to dig a little deeper. I want to ask you a question and I want you to answer it, to yourself, honestly. I'm not talking beat around the bush and give the church answer. I want you to answer the DIRT!
What sin, from your former way of living, do you keep returning to? Or have a hard time keeping away from.
I'm not trying to ruin your life or reputation here. Because to be honest with you, I DON'T KNOW YOU! I don't know your secrets or what your personal sins are. But just case you don't have the slightest idea what I'm referring to or maybe you are playing dumb let me assist you.
Lying, gossiping, playing the what if card, watching porn, smoking, drinking, cheating, sleeping around, witchcraft.
This list could contain one or more things that you used to do. I see sin differently from some people. If there is something that you are doing, over and over, that God has specifically told you not to do, I see that as sinful nature. It's disobedience. So pick something you keep returning to. Something you can't seem to get away from. That one thing that you can't seem to give up. Do you have it? Great! If you said no..... think again.
The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians that when we are in Christ we are a new creation. The old has passed. Things we used to do, aren't important anymore. We are supposed to spend time renewing our mind and our habits (Romanas 12:2). We aren't the same person anymore. That doesn't mean that it's going to be a walk in the park and we won't be picking daisies in a field full of flowers. That's not the case. It's hard.
John 10:10 tells us that the enemy has come to steal, kill, and destroy. That sounds SOOOOOO not happy. The enemy will tempt us over and over to get us to return to our old ways of thinking and acting. I heard a Pastor say once that the enemy will attack us where he was successful the last time. Example. He tempts you to contact your ex, even though God has made it evident they are not for you, and you contact them. That's probably what he's going to use again to tempt you.
His goal is to keep us as far away from our destiny. Trip us up. Not keep us focused. Keep us paralyzed and silenced in shame and guilt. I want to quote a very important scripture.
As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats their folly.
Proverbs 26:11
If we continue to go back to those sins over and over. We are fools. It's keeping us bound. Keeping us tied to our sinful nature. I encourage you to really watch the schemes of the enemy.
