Declare and Decree.
A lot of people just complete shuttered at this phrase. You hear this in charismatic churches a lot. Or even, 'speak it into existence.' A lot of people don't like that. I, however, use it daily. What I've discovered is that, like EVERYTHING, it's a matter of wording. Or it's a matter of one bad experience which molds a persons thinking for their entire life. Example. If you have heard a Pastor tell his congregation that they should just speak something over their lives and it will happen, you have to know there is more to that statement. However, there are some people who take this phrase to a whole different level of crazy.
If you wake up one morning and you look in the mirror and decide that you have gained some, "holiday weight' and you need to go on a diet. You know for a fact that you have to put effort into it. You can't just wake up every day and say, "I'm gonna lose weight." You have to adjust your eating habits and your work out regiment. You can't just say that it's gonna happen without putting some effort. That's where James 2:14-26 comes into play. This portion of scripture talks about faith without deeds. You cannot lose weight without putting forth some work. The same way you can't speak something into existence without putting in some work.
The Bible also tells us in Proverbs 18:21 that there is life and death in the tongue. This is a powerful scripture for someone who is an encourager. If you are someone who enjoys lifting peoples spirits and encouraging them. You know how important your words are. Let me show you 2 cases in the Bible where a persons words created life and death. Let me start with life. Ezekiel 37, one of my favorite stories. The valley of dry bones. You can read it on your own time. But this is a story of a man looking at bones and telling them to live. Just by his words, the bones came together and life was placed in them. Now death, 1 King 19:1-3. Some of you know the story of Elijah. Let's just say, he wasn't Satan's favorite person. Jezebel, don't even get me started with this delightful individual, sent word to Elijah and it completely terrified him. And he ran.
Our words hold great weight. I'm not saying that you can say, "I'm driving the Ferrari today." And believe there is one in your driveway if you haven't put in the time to put money back and made payments on it. But I do believe that God's spirit resides in me. And if God looked into a vast sea of nothing and said let there be light and there was light. Why can't I believe that the words I speak hold that much weight? There is a song that says, "The same power that conquered the grave lives in me." And it does!!
What I'm trying to wrap this package up into is this. Your words hold value. You can declare things over your life and decree things over your life. But you can't be foolish enough to believe that just because you repeat it over and over without putting some faith with it that it will happen. That's my take on it. Yours may be different. Yours may be the same. BUT at the end of the day, we can (YES WE CAN) agree to disagree and move on with our life.
