Psalm 5

Listen to my words, Lord, consider my lament. Hear my cry for help, my king my God, for to you I pray. (1 and 2)

Lament means passion expression of grief or sorrow. So we see David crying out to God. We know that he was a man after Gods' heart. He always went to God first when he was in distress. I hope that we all have that attitude. When things get bad, we fall at the feet of Jesus. We cry out to him above everyone else.

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly. (3)

One key word in that verse for me is, "wait." A lot of times we expect God to give us what we ask for immediately. And the funny thing is that isn't how it works. Sometimes we have to wait a long time for the things we ask for. Sometimes we don't. God hears us, even if we don't think that he does. We have to make it a habit to LAY our requests before him. No matter what that means. Happy requests. Sad requests. It doesn't matter.

For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness; with you, evil people are not welcome. The arrogant cannot stand in your presence. You hate all who do wrong; you destroy those who tell lies. The bloodthirsty and deceitful you, Lord, detest. (4 - 6)

There is no mixing good with wickedness. God does not want those people around him. This just shows what we shouldn't be. Qualities that we shouldn't possess. It's really hard to see God hate something or detest something. Those are serious words y'all.

But I, by your great love, can come into your house; in reverence, I bow down toward your holy temple. (7)

It's a big deal that we can come into the presence of God. A lot of people have no idea what that really means because they haven't studied it in detail. I don't have time to explain it because that would take more than one blog. But we are to be in the presence of God with great reverence. Meaning deep respect for God.

Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies - make your way straight before me.  (8)

We all get distracted. And Satan loves that. He loves for us to get off the path. Not only does he use our enemies but he uses people who love us and are close to us. People from church, in our families, those who claim to love us the most. We have to make sure that our path is straight and we follow it. Right now, I'm asking for God to make sure I'm following the path that he has set before me. Whatever it may be. It's not an easy prayer but, as a Christian, it's one I keep praying.

Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with malice. their throat is an open grave; with their tongues, they tell lies. Declare them guilty, O God! Let their intrigues be their downfall. Banish them from their many sins, for they have rebelled against you. (9 and 10)

Apparently, David was having a time with his enemies. I know that we feel that way too. When we are faced with people who aren't trying to help us out and trying to block us from gaining any ground in our calling. David just seemed passionate about that.

But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you. Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield. (11 and 12)

I can honestly say that I would want to be on David's good side. Which would be God's good side. Looking back over this portion of scripture, it makes it simple. Choose which side you are going to be on because you can't be on both sides. Either be on God's team, or oppose him.
