Over the past week or so I have been looking into the life of David. Which I feel like if you want to know about someone's life you have to look into the things leading up to their life to get a better idea of what's going on. I started off reading 1 Samuel and learning about Samuel and Saul before I was ever introduced to David.
Fast forward to chapter 17. This is where we see the famous children's story. David and Goliath. A little back story. Saul was a bad kitty and God was grieved that he had made Saul king of Israel . He sent Samuel to anoint David over his brothers. He was the youngest and tended the sheep. But God told Samuel to not judge a book by its cover. Fast forward a little bit further and the Philistines were fighting the Israelites.
Here's where we will pick up, in Samuel 17. The whole army was being faced with this mammoth of a man called Goliath. They were intimidated and they feared him. While back on the farm, David was chilling in the fields tending to the sheep. His dad asks him to go to the battlefield and take grain and bread to his brothers camp. He also sent cheese to the commander of their unit. We see in verse 18 that Jesse wanted some assurance that his sons were doing okay.
David did as his father asked and went to the camp. His brothers weren't there so he RAN out to the battle lines and greeted his brothers. He was in the midst of a battle that he hadn't even been invited to. While he's standing there, mister mammoth comes strolling up the lane, as he did every day. He started his little song and dance routine. Here's David thinking, who is this dude who is trying to defy the armies of the living God?
David remained in focus that God was in control. Over the army. Over the situation. His focus was clear. David's oldest brother was all bent out of shape about what was going on so he attempts to distract David. This just shows me that sometimes those around you won't understand you and will try to block you from the task you were created for. You could look like a complete fool. You might look completely off your rocker with things you say or attempt to do. This is exactly what David's brother thought, so he called him out. Unfortunately for David, it wasn't just his brothers trying to block him.
Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting from his youth" 1 Samuel 17:33
There are so many things in our life to distract us. Things that will keep us from accomplishing what we have been called to do. The biggest thing is ourselves. BUT sometimes people will come up against us. Situations may hinder us. Finances may bind us. But our own stinking thinking, and those around us, will try to put a stop to it. There is an upside. Check out what it says in 37.
The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.
David had overcome the battlefield of his mind. He knew that God was going to deliver him. He didn't care about the situation. He had faith in God. First, David was obedient to go to the battlefield to check on his brother. And while he was there, at a battle he wasn't supposed to be involved in, he decided he was going to take this giant down. Saul says, "Okay, let's get you strapped for battle." In verse 38 and 39 Saul gets him dressed in HIS OWN armor. Saul didn't think that David could go in a battle situation without protection. Just because someone THINKS that we can't, doesn't mean that we can't. Someone else's tactics, or their battle plan, might not work for you.
David tells Saul that he can't fight in those because he wasn't used to it. He took his staff in his hand, chose 5 smooth stones from the stream and put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with a sling shot in his hand, approached the Philistine. (Verse 39-40) God equip David with the tools he needed. David didn't go to the battlefield dressed in armor. He went in as himself and God took care of him. God doesn't call people who are equip to do the job. He equips those who need to be there to do the work they need to do.
David went right up to Goliath and in verse 45 says, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel , whom you have defied." David had zero fear. He walked right up to the giant and "snap snap snap." He threw down with confidence. He stood there in faith knowing that God had it all under control.
When Goliath came towards him, he ran toward him and, well. We know the rest of the story. David was obedient to his father and went to check on his brothers. Brothers who, I'm sure, were not excited that David was anointed over them. While he was there he kept his faith that his God was going to protect him and get him to the victory circle. Even though Saul didn't think he was going to be able to accomplish what he said he was going to do, he dressed him for battle as he would do himself. However, David couldn't go into battle like Saul would because he wasn't used to the armor and battle gear. He went as David. Son of Jesse. He wasn't trying to be anyone else. He stood in front of this giant and RAN towards him when he came to attack him. And with all of that, what happened. HE WAS VICTORIOUS!
Be Obedient
Know that opposition will come in many different forms
Keep your Faith
Don't fight like others
Know that YOU ARE YOU FOR A REASON
Go into battle with confidence
Get the victory
