A lot of times, when we are a part of a ministry, we get overwhelmed with doing instead of being. Let me explain this. We spend so much time with I need to do this and do that that we forget that we are supposed to be. Just be. The perfect example of this is the story of Mary and Martha. Luke 10:38-42.
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
We see that Jesus was just strolling along with his people and said, "Hey, it would be cool to visit Mary and Martha." Jesus just stopped by. No text warning, nothing. Just stopping by. So, of course, Martha starts running around trying to get things in order and Mary sits at Jesus's feet. She is completely involved with what Jesus is saying.
How many of you are like Mary? When you are at church you are able to focus in on what God is saying through the Pastor? Or are you like Martha? You are running around trying to get things accomplished. Trying to make sure that everything is perfect. God doesn't call us to make sure things are perfect. God doesn't want us in a box. He wants us to be able to go with the flow. Life is messy! Life is unpredictable.
Where is your heart when you are doing ministry? Are you doing it to say look at me? Or are you doing it to point to the God of the universe? In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy path. We have to make sure our intentions are right. I can't say that mine have always been correct. God's teaching me the HARD way. Or should I say, I'm pretty hard headed?
If you ask me, Martha probably had great intentions. She wanted everything to be perfect for Jesus. It's like the president showing up at your house. You'd probably want the place to look spotless!!! Where as Jesus just wanted to impart knowledge to Mary and Martha. If we lose our purpose. If we lose our reasoning for stepping into our purpose. We lose our passion.
When we step out of pursuing our purpose with acknowledging God in all things. We step into working our passion into the ground. It can start off as Passion but can quickly turn to work. We HAVE to do it. We HAVE to greet people at the door on Sunday instead of we GET to do it. I HAVE to preach Sunday instead of I GET to. Like Jesus showing up at Mary and Martha's. Mary got to see Jesus. Martha HAD to get things ready. Their perspectives were focused on different things.
Check your perspective. Remember your purpose. Check your motives. Live in passion.
