If you have the newest electronic whatever, there is someone out there wanting it for themselves. I know that every time someone upgrades to the newest phone I flip and want a new one. God tells us not to Covet. So, it's kinda difficult when you see others who have things you wish you had. We all do it. Sometimes it's with things that we wouldn't even think would be a problem.
I remember going through a really bad season in my life in the early part of my marriage. I was super depressed. Gloom and doom followed me everywhere I went. People avoided me because I was super sad and just yuck. There was a guy who was at our church who was ALWAYS filled with joy. I just sat and watched him with this glow about him and wanted it. For months I would just sit and wish I had a little of what he had. Just a touch. Satan had stolen my joy and I wasn't willing to fight for it. Then I remembered the story of Elijah and Elisha.
When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.? And Elisha replied, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor." 2 Kings 2:9
I stopped this man one night in a prayer meeting and said, "I am very depressed. Satan has stolen my joy. I cannot take it anymore. Please pray that I receive a portion of what you have. I want my joy back." With massive enthusiasm this man prayed for me. It wasn't an instant fix. It took time. But it came. Matthew 7:7 and Luke 11:9 tell us that if we ask it will be given to us.
Don't get it twisted. You can't ask for just anything. Don't be ignorant and ask for new cars, electronics, boyfriends/girlfriends. Don't ask for the things that will pass away, but ask for things that will not pass away. Like wisdom, courage, strength, the things of God. I'm not saying that if you have a car that you are nickle and diming that you can't ask for assistance for another vehicle. I'm saying, use your brain when you ask for things. Like Elisha, we should be looking for things that would benefit our calling in life to expand the kingdom of God. If you need a vehicle to get to church, it's okay to ask for help with it. But don't get mad if it doesn't come tomorrow.
We have to use our brain when it comes to asking God for things. We also can't be scared to ask for things. Example. I can tell you a portion of scripture like it's nothing but I can't tell you exactly where it's located. When I hear pastors speak and they say like in blah blah blah when blah blah blah did blah blah blah. I'm just flat out floored. I told God I wanted to be able to do that. Here it is years later, I'm still trying to get to that point. BUT I have developed a love for reading, which makes me pick up my bible and I'm learning more locations of where stories are because I'm reading and studying. God has a very crafty way of answering our "gimme" prayers and our heartfelt prayers.
Check your motives and heart before you start asking God to 'Gimme that.'
