A few weeks ago I was talking to a good friend of mine and she mentioned a situation she had dealt with in the past to drive home a point for me. We were discussing people wanting the end results but not wanting to put forth the effort. It's like wanting to be thin, without dieting or exercise. Or wanting a lot of money and not wanting to work for it. It can cover a multitude of things. A scripture popped into my head.
Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few.
Matthew 9:37
We use this so much in ministry because we always have a few people that seem to step up to do things when others don't. It may look like something it isn't from an outside perspective. But our conversation didn't end there. It continued on towards a conversation about how people can get stuck in a rut. I'm not sure how to say this without making people angry or upset, so I'm just going to be blunt.
God may be calling you to do something and you face a lot of opposition. A group of people may pull in another direction from where you feel called to go. And there isn't anything wrong with that. Just know that YOU are not responsible for ANYONE but yourself. My friend and I ended up talking about how religious people get stuck in their ways and aren't willing to listen to anything but what they feel is right.
This happens too often in churches. They aren't willing to look outside the box. They want it done their way or no way. When we get to those places in our life, we have to learn that WE cannot change anyone. We cannot make anyone do what we feel God is calling us to do. Religious people get stuck a lot. And I know that I have myself.
Lets have an example shall we? I was a part of an organization where I felt strongly about going one direction and the majority wanted to go the other way. I felt strongly that God was asking me to do the opposite of what everyone else wanted to do. I ended up leaving the organization and growing. Sometimes it's not that simple. Sometimes you have to stand in the midst of something until you are released. For those times you are told to stay and stand remember this.
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faith not.
Galatians 6:9
The workers are few, and sometimes you may feel like you are the only one doing the work. Sometimes people will think you are crazy and not want anything to do with your calling. Don't become weary. Keep going. Press on! It's worth it in the end. Even if only ONE person is touched.
