Obedience vs Selfishness

Been a while, been a little busy. I asked Justin recently what the difference was between Insecurity and Humbleness. It was a very interesting conversation, but today I want to talk about obedience verses selfishness. Let me be a 'boring' writer, as my advanced composition teacher would say, and define both of these words to start.

Selfish - Lacking consideration for others.
Obedience - Submission to authority.

Obviously these two things are not the same. One is for personal gain and the other is not. I put up a facebook status recently about this very subject. It was along the lines of would you rather make a few people mad for a while or spend your days apologizing to God for being disobedient?

If the world hates you, keep in mind it hated me first." John 15:18 (NIV)

You realize that when we are asked to do something, by God. We have a choice. That's what God gave us, free will. But, just like children, there are consequences for our actions. I don't know about you, but if God asks me to do something I'm going to do it. I would rather have consequences of people being mad at me then God being mad at me.

Most of the time when God asks us to do something it's never easy, it's out of our comfort zone. It's something we aren't really comfortable with. But isn't that the point? Getting us to do things we aren't comfortable with in an act of obedience? It is something that could be very simple or something a lot more complicated. God wouldn't ask us to do things if he didn't want us to grow or become a better person.

If God is leading you to do something outside of your comfort zone, there is a reason. Are you going to be selfish or obedient? The choice is yours, but the worldly consequences are nothing compared to what could be facing you later on in life. Think about it.
