This is one of the Inspirational gifts, which are used strictly for the benefit of the church. They are used for Edification, Exhortation, and Comfort. Prophets are chosen by God, not by man. This is a gifting that we have to be very careful of. Let me STOP ELABORATE AND LISTEN.
Prophecy is not
foretelling the future
preaching
used for guidance
used for rebuking people
minister criticism
Prophecy is
used for edification (build up)
exhortation (encourage)
comfort (consolation)
False prophets is something that a lot of people are quick to call out. There is a biblical warning about calling out false prophets. We have to be careful of judgement, because it will come back upon us later on. Sadly there are a lot of wolves in sheep clothing. We have to test everything with scripture. There was this amazing list I found in Commissioned with Power that puts the power of prophecy in perspective.
Because of Prophecy.
We have the Bible.
We have the great prophecies of the Savior's birth.
We have the promise that Christ will come again.
We have absolute proof of the divine authorship of the Scriptures.
We have a means of direct communication with God.
Communion, which was lost in the Garden of Eden, is restored.
We have certain other gifts of the Spirit in operation.
The Church receives exhortation, edification, and comfort.
Within certain bounds, we have guidance through different situations.
We have the testimony of Jesus as the Spirit of prophecy; the gift honors Christ.
We have the promise of "things of prophecy."
Honor is paid to the Scriptures. (Which were originally given through the gift.)
We are warned of dangers ahead and how to avoid them.
The Church is given a new consciousness of God's presence.
